What is WiFi and how does it work?

  • It is an abbreviation for wireless fidelity, meaning you can simply access a specific network using radio waves – (simply put, WIRELESSLY). Without needing to use any wires.

  • An example is when you go to MacDonald’s to wirelessly connect to their WiFi network to get on the Internet without connecting your computer to any wires.

  • With the growth of technology, you can also use smart phones and tablets that have WiFi enabled features to connect to a specific WiFi.

What are our speeds?

Our speeds range from 2Mbps to 40Mbps

What is a router?

  • A router is a device that routes your data packets (Device) to a desired or destination network.

  • In our case our router routes your data packets (Device) to our core network in order to get on the internet.

What is a POE injector?

  • A device that adds power to an Ethernet cable for Power Over Ethernet (PoE) equipment. Although Ethernet switches are available with PoE capability, millions of regular “non-PoE” switches are already installed.

What is installed by the technical team?

  • Hotspot / AP Installation consists of a ZTE Wireless Radio (model ZXV10 W615), Outdoor

  • 3-6 Meter pole depending on Line of Site. Outdoor

  • Wall Mount Bracket to mount the pole and bracket. Outdoor

  • Lan Cable to transfer data and to power the device. Outdoor and Indoor

  • PoE ( Power over Ethernet ) adapter for power supply. Indoor

  • Enclosure Box to protect the PoE. Indoor

  • Home Solution consists of an M2 Ubiquiti Radio.Outdoor

    • 2-3 Meter pole depending on Line of Site. Outdoor

    • Wall Mount Bracket to mount the Pole and bracket. Outdoor

    • Lan Cable to transfer data and to power the device Outdoor and Indoor

    • PoE ( Power over Ethernet ) adapter for power supply. Indoor

    • Ubiquiti Router that will be connected directly to the PoE. Indoor

What is the difference between the "WHITE" and "BLUE" light on the router?

  • On the POE adapter and router when powered the lights will be white.

  • On the Router the light which is smaller than the PoE should change to Blue which indicates that your device is connected to the network and therefore is connected to the Internet.

The connection has been established, why can I not browse?

  • For any queries kindly contact our BrightWave office to make sure you have not reached your monthly data limit or to find out if there is any network fault that needs to be attended to.

If I'm connected to the BrightWave network, do I need a password?

  • For any BrightWaveFreeWiFi hotspot there is no password required

  • For apartment buildings, you have to connect to WiFi and then a login page will popup or it will prompt you to sign into WiFi depending on the type of device you are using. Then you register and create your own username and password. Kindly save the credentials you created because you will use them in future to sign into WiFi.

  • For Home Connect, a technician will be assigned to create one for you, kindly save it.

How do I know that I am at a BrightWaveFree hotspot?

  • Hotspots are branded with “Free WiFi Hotspot” stickers.  Also, if you switch on your WiFi on your smart device and you pick up “BrightWaveFreeWiFi”, then you know you are at a hotspot.  Simply click on “BrightWaveFreeWiFi” to connect and enjoy your browsing experience.

Why can I not connect to the BrightWaveFree hotspot?

  • Contact our BrightWave offices and provide the following to our customer service consultant:

    • WiFi you trying to connect to.

    • The ERROR message that is being displayed.

    • Physical address of the Hotspot you are at.

Where to purchase data ?

  • You can deposit the amount to the following account and email your proof of payment to support@brightwave.co.za .

  • You can pay using “PayNow” or “PayFast”.

  • You can visit any of our nearest branches and make the payment at reception.

Is it possible to see how much data I still have?

  • Yes. Call our call centre (toll free) on 0800 060 066 to check your data balance.

Where can we get BrightWave posters or stickers?

  • You may call the BrightWave toll free number on 0800 060 066 if you require BrightWave stickers.  Our sales team will deliver these to you.
